INTRODUCTION

The Students for Medical Missions at the Medical College of Ohio is proud to announce the Fourth Annual Health Care Missions Symposium: Global Disparities in Health Care.  Our organization strongly believes that eliminating inequalities in health care should be a priority for all medical professionals.  To that end we have invited a number of distinguished speakers to lead an exciting symposium designed to educate participants about the medically underserved and how best to serve their needs.  This year, we are pleased to highlight the contributions of the Nobel-prize winning group, Doctors Without Borders, in providing medical relief worldwide.  Learn about ways to overcome health care discrepancies and opportunities for you to make a difference in your own community and around the world.  Emphasis will be placed on barriers the poor and underserved face in receiving health care as well as the prospects of health care reform.  Physicians, nurses, dentists, and allied health professionals are invited to attend.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

·          Describe the humanitarian impact of Doctors Without Borders on access to healthcare in impoverished countries.

·          Cite the health problems that refugee groups experience.

·          Identify the unique health care needs of people in third world countries affected by natural disasters and be able to apply the knowledge gained to similar situations in the U.S. and abroad.

·          Demonstrate how Toledo’s newest medical mission team, Development of Vietnam Endeavors (D.O.V.E.), establishes an ongoing medical mission program and clinic in Vietnam.

·          Discuss the direct and indirect barriers to medical access as a result of ethnic and racial discrimination.

·          Recognize the dynamic processes involved to provide continuous interdisciplinary care to an underprivileged patient living in a third world country.
